This is a tiger. not to be confused with a dragon (which parade the streets on Chinese New Year), or a lion (which guard people's homes.) Traditionally baby boys in China wear hats and shoes decorated with tiger motif, so they will grow up strong.

I picked up this book years ago from my high school library, when they were getting rid of old books. This one is a collection of short stories published in the 40s.
